Electrical Compliance

All electrical systems must comply with current Australian standards before insulation installation, as per ACT electrical requirements. This includes upgrading the switchboard to meet current standards, replacing all lighting with IC-4 rated fixtures, and installing draft stoppers to reduce airflow through the ceiling space. This electrical safety inspection can be done by our licensed electricians or your own.

When new insulation is installed, it alters the thermal environment of existing electrical cabling, as the cables may no longer dissipate heat as effectively when surrounded by insulation. This can reduce the current-carrying capacity (ampacity) of the circuit. In modern switchboards, compliance can often be achieved by simply adjusting or replacing RCD switches. However, older switchboards may require a full upgrade to ensure ongoing electrical safety and compliance with current standards.

To achieve complete ceiling insulation coverage without leaving gaps, recessed lighting must be addressed. This can be managed in two ways: by installing IC-4 rated downlights (IC = insulation contact, meaning the fitting has been tested and approved for direct contact with insulation), or by fitting IC-rated downlight covers over existing fixtures. Both methods allow insulation to be safely installed over and around the lights. IC-rated downlights and covers are specifically designed to create a sealed barrier, preventing overheating and minimising fire risk while maintaining energy efficiency.
